Asus ROG Phone 2 First Impressions; Gaming Phone redefined!

The Asus ROG Phone was launched around 8 months ago, the company had a lot of time to take into consideration the reviews, the feedbacks and other aspects of their phone in order to create the second generation ROG phone, the Asus ROG Phone 2. Well, let’s see if they did just that.

Asus launched their second generation gaming smartphone on Monday. We got to spend some time with it and here’s our hands-on and first impressions.

The phone feels very sturdy in hand and this time around Asus has given it a more rugged finish. Aimed at mobile gamers, the device gives users a perfect gaming experience and with the help of its beefy battery, it can survive for a day or two easily.

ROG Phone 2 just like it’s predecessor packs in some of the best hardware available in the market. It might just be even better this time around. Asus has improved their display by a lot this time around, to be precise, they have improved by just around 120Hz. That’s right, ROG 2 comes with a display that supports HDR 10, 240Hz touch sensing and 120Hz refresh-rate.

This basically means that the users are assured of the best viewing experience while gaming or even while watching high resolution videos, especially the videos on my channel. Forgot to subscribe? Here’s a link.

Comparing both the ROG phones, the ROG 2 feels a bit compact to hold in hand and because of its 6.59-inch display, it does feel taller and wider than any other phone in the market today, which is very helpful. Gamers play holding their device in a horizontal manner, so a wider screen gives them the opportunity to visualize each and every detail.

Asus ROG Phone 2: The Hardware

The biggest upgrade to this device is the hardware. The Snapdragon 855 Plus edition replaces the older Snapdragon 845 to provide you with faster processing. Snapdragon 855 runs at 2.84GHz whereas the Plus variant clocks at 2.96GHz. As for the GPU frequency it has been bumped to 675Hz from the previous 585Hz, which basically improves the graphics rendering to about 15 percent.

ROG Phone 2 will be available in two variants – 8GB RAM with 128GB storage and a whopping 12GB LPDDR4X RAM with 512GB. The company has gone with UFS 3.0 internal storage so file transfers and other stuff should be a lot more fun.

Well, by now everyone knows that to power up a gaming phone such as the ROG 2 they need a big battery and Asus has not fallen back in this category. The device packs in a massive 6,000mAh battery, which should easily make it through the day with gaming and around 2 days with normal usage.

Of course, a basic charger won’t get the battery up and running before you get ready to have an intense session of PUBG or even candy crush, who am I to judge?. Well, yeah, it is supported by Qualcomm’s Quick charge 4.0. The company claims you can charge up to around 66 percent of the battery within just 58 mins.

Just like their first edition of the ROG Phone you get some accessories with it. First things first, your first edition ROG phone accessories won’t be compatible here. The re-designed AeroActive Cooler 2 Fan is now 4x quieter and provides directional air to your fingers as well when placed at the rear. AeroActive Cooler also provides you with a secondary 3.5mm audio jack and a USB Type-C port.

They also released the TwinView dock which adds another screen for users to look at. And yes, that also comes with a 120Hz refresh rate display.

Asus ROG Phone 2: The Speakers

ROG Phone 2 does not come with your ordinary stereo speakers, yes it does come with stereo speakers just that it has two of them and both are front facing. It comes with DTS:X Ultra support with 5 magnet speakers that are louder by 2.5 times the predecessor ROG phone.

Asus has also added four noise cancelling microphones so if you mistakenly cover up one of them while you are in an intense 2v4 or 4v4 battle in PUBG, you can communicate via the other mics provided and yes, your friends will thank you for the noise cancelling microphones.

Asus ROG Phone 2: The Cameras

Cameras are not the main aspect of a gaming smartphone. However, Asus did not turn their backs on this. ROG Phone 2 comes packed with a dual-rear facing camera that is ready to capture every moment of your glory.

The back camera setup is pretty mainstream with the strip running from the middle of the back case coupled with an LED flash. The primary camera of the ROG Phone 2 comes with a Sony Exmor IMX586 image sensor which almost every smartphone manufacturer is using nowadays so nothing too fancy over here. The rear camera comes with a 48 mega-pixel sensor which can shoot some crisp images in natural lighting. 

As for the front side, Asus has chosen not to go with the trend as of now, which is the fullview display, instead it comes with a thin top bezel which holds the front camera in the traditional style. The front camera comes with a 24 mega-pixel sensor for social media ready selfies.

Asus ROG Phone 2: Pricing and Availablity

 As of now, the availablity and pricing of the device in India is unknown.However, Asus unveiled the pricing of the device at the event.The base variant of the Asus ROG Phone 2 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage carries a price tag of CNY 3,499, while the variant with 12GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage is priced at CNY 5,999 . If the ROG Phone 2 is launched in India at a starting price tag of Rs.40,000, it will be a very eye-catchy deal.
