The budget segment nowadays has tons of options to choose from. With devices from Redmi, Infinix and many others. We’ve seen CoolPad in this market before and today also we’ll be taking a look at their latest offering, the Cool 5. In the past, we’ve reviewed the Cool Pad Cool 3 Plus and enjoyed using it for some while. Let’s take a look at how the Cool 5 will fare in our day-to-day usage.
Unboxing and First Impressions:
The traditional squared box returns with the Cool 5 greeting you followed by a TPU case, a scratch guard, charging brick and I can’t believe I’m saying this, A Type-C cable. Finally, budget devices are starting to get Type C ports. Many companies nowadays provide TPU cases and a scratch guard which is actually very good and worth mentioning. Holding the device, the first words that came out of my mouth were, it’s quite compact.
Design and Display:
The gradient back panel seems to be the trend and I am a fan of that. The device comes in Gradient Blue and Midnight Blue. We have the Gradient blue with us. The rear is made out of good quality plastic. To the top, the device comes with a dual rear camera setup with an LED flash and a fingerprint sensor to accompany it. Moving to the front of the device, the Cool 5 sports a 6.22-inch HD+ TFT-IPS display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. Also, it flaunts the infamous dewdrop notch. However, the bottom bezel of the device is a real let down since it is very thick and eats up the screen to body ratio.
To the sides of the device is the volume rocker and the power button and on the other side is the sim slot wherein you can insert a sim card and a microSD, in simple words, it comes with a hybrid slot. To the bottom of the device is Type-C port for charging and speaker grills with a 3,5mm headphone jack on top of the device.
Battery and Software:
The CoolPad Cool 5 is backed by a 4,000mAh battery which should last a day with moderate usage. The device is powered by MediaTek’s Helio P22 SoC which performs very well on the device. Like switching through apps and stuff was not an issue for the chip. The device comes in a single 4GB and 64GB variant which in my opinion is good in this price segment. The device runs on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box and hopefully, we can see future updates on the device.
Cameras:
The rear dual-camera setup comes with a 13MP primary sensor and a 2MP depth sensor for crisp photos and to the front of the device is a 16MP shooter that comes with tons of features such as bokeh mode, beauty mode, FaceCute mode and tons of other features you can scroll through.
The Coolpad Cool 5 is the successor to the Cool 3 Plus and it does quite a good job in succeeding the expectations. The device retails at a price tag of Rs.7,999 on Amazon and the device as of today is available for sale.
