A big announcement was due by Xiaomi this year and it finally happened. The announcement was the launch of their flagship – Mi Note 2, the successor to the briefly famous Mi Note / Pro. Frankly, the timing couldn’t be better with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 out of the picture, leaving a big void in the “Most desirable big-screen smartphone” segment.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 – What makes this monster?
Right off the bat, you can’t ignore the fact that Xiaomi has taken few pointers from Samsung’s late Galaxy Note 7. The aluminum frame is sandwiched between two curved stylish glass panels. The front glass panel is the display which is a 5.7-inch OLED flexible display with a FullHD resolution (might be a bummer to some). The back panel matches the aesthetics of the front but this time around the glass is polished up for a mirror finish. Keeping it simple, you only have two colors to choose from – Piano Black and Glacier Silver.
With a 77.2% body ratio and premium materials, there’s little to frown about the design and build quality. Same can be said about the specs as well. The Mi Note 2 is powered by the latest & greatest from Qualcomm – Snapdragon 821 SoC with a clock speed of 2.35GHz. The maxed out variant comes with 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB UFS 2.0 Storage while the lower variant comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Backing up all this is a 4070mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0.

Rumors leading up to Mi Note 2’s launch showcased dual camera setups. However, Xiaomi decided not to go trendy with this one. It has gone for a weird sounding 22.56MP Sony IMX318 Exmor Sensor with an aperture of f/2.0 lens. The camera can shoot at 4K and assisted by EIS digital stabilization. On the front side, there is an 8MP selfie camera with Auto Focus (one of the firsts in the industry).
We have seen such impressive spec’d cameras turn out to be potatoes so we will have to wait and watch how this camera setup performs in real life usage. As a reviewer who knows its bout software as much as it is about hardware, I’m not going to raise my hopes and be disappointed later. You should do the same too.
Xiaomi is not messing around this time when it comes to going global. Although the phone is not available outside China for now, it is packed with plenty of international connectivity options. It offers global LTE support across 6 network types and 37 bands. So fret not if you decide to import this phone to your country.
Other interesting aspect on the Mi Note 2 is the high-quality 24-bit / 192 kHz DAC. Audiophiles, we know the face you’re making right now!
Now coming to the most important part- the price! The phone starts at CNY 2799 ~ $413 ~ Rs. 27,999 for a 4GB variant with 64 GB of storage, going up to CNY 3499 ~ $516 ~ Rs. 34,999 for a global model with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. The bad news for Indian consumers is that both Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and Mi Mix will not be making a debut in India. However, you can import the phone but do keep in mind the additional amount you will be paying for Customs.
