Redmi 9 Prime Review!

Launching phones left and right is not easy job. Well, Xiaomi and Realme have mastered that by now. And, with the Redmi 9 Prime, they might’ve just hit the sweet spot. So, shall we take a look? The Redmi 9 Prime is priced below the Rs. 10,000 price segment and below it’s bigger brother, the Redmi Note 9 Series.

Well, for starters, the Redmi 9 sports a 6.53-inch display with a notch up front that houses an 8MP sensor. The fact that Redmi was able to fit in a 1080p FHD+ IPS display on a device under the 10k price segment in itself is something to praise. Watching content on it was a breeze. We watched a couple of movies and some TV shows on the Redmi 9 Prime and the display did not disappoint. Also, it has corning gorilla glass 3 protection, so that’s a plus. The display does get bright enough for indoor usage. However, in bright sunlight, it does get somewhat hard to see what’s being displayed on the screen. The brightness level is 400nit and, that’s probably why.

And, as mentioned earlier, the phone does support Widevine L1 certification so watching content on Amazon, Netflix above 480p is possible.

The Redmi 9 Prime is designed quite well, actually, the back panel even resembles the Poco X2, except for the 4th lens and flash placement. The all-plastic build does not feel cheap by any means, thanks to the textured back panel which helps in giving the user a grip while holding it.

As we are talking about the back panel, let’s take a look at the rear-mounted cameras and the fingerprint scanner. Well, I think Quad camera setups are now mainstream, even though I highly disagree with that. Many companies are launching phones with the same. The Redmi 9 Prime is no exception to that. It features a 13MP primary sensor, 8MP ultra-wide sensor, 5MP macro sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. The fourth sensor is placed individually alongside the Led flash so that the fingerprint sensor can be placed below the camera setup.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is the best human invention ever. Haha, jokes aside. The fingerprint sensor works fine and even though the Redmi 9 Prime has a tall and wide form factor, reaching the sensor was no issue at all.

The Redmi 9 Prime’s primary sensor is actually decent in good lighting conditions. Especially when shot outdoors. It is able to capture the details properly with neutral colors. The Ultra-wide shots tend to up the highlights a bit but it is decent for landscape shots, and yes, again, under good lighting only.

In low-light, it doesn’t perform that well since it doesn’t capture the details that well and also you can see grains/noise in the captures.

Under the hood, it packs in the MediaTek Helio G80 SoC which is coupled with 4GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage. It comes with Android 10 out of the box with the MIUI 11 skin on top of it. Let’s talk about the main highlight of the device, the 5,020 mah battery that’s packed inside. We had no issues getting through a day, with enough juice left to continue a couple of hours the next day. Inside the box, you get a 10W standard charger, however, the Redmi 9 Prime does support an 18W fast charger.

As for PUBG, well, the Helio G80 coupled with Mali G52 GPU was able to get HD at High frame rates. However, when we tested the gyroscope, the performance wasn’t as we expected it. It was late to respond and wasn’t quite reliable.
